Granite Belt Wineries Where You Can Stay the Night

The Granite Belt sits close to a kilometre up, cold at night and quiet once the cellar doors shut, which is exactly when you want to be staying on a vineyard rather than driving back to town. Eleven cellar doors across Ballandean, Glen Aplin, Eukey and Stanthorpe let you sleep on their own land, from a cottage for two to twenty cedar cabins around a brewery. Every stay below is described in the venue's own words.

The Short Version

• Nine Granite Belt wineries, a brewery and a distillery have somewhere to sleep on their own land, from a cottage for two to twenty cedar cabins.
• Six are at Ballandean, two are at Glen Aplin and Eukey, and three are around Stanthorpe.
• Two let your dog stay the night, Ridgemill Estate and Granite Belt Retreat & Brewery, and The Ginyard's Gin House is adults only.

Most of these are small and many open only late in the week, so the order you book in matters. Here they are by area, starting in Ballandean, where most of them are.

Ballandean

1) Golden Grove Estate (Ballandean), a three-bedroom farmhouse in the vines

Why it works:

• Their own words: “Escape to the heart of Queensland wine country” at Marnita Farmhouse, on the estate.
• It has “Three bedrooms each with queen-size beds”, a wood-fired dining room and a games room, with a “complimentary bottle of estate-grown wine on arrival”.
• The cellar door opens every day except Wednesday, 10am to 4pm, and until 5pm on Saturday.

There is a “Minimum 2 night stay.” Midweek, the farmhouse runs a three-for-two: pay for Monday and Tuesday night and Wednesday is free. The cellar door says “The whole family is welcome to visit Golden Grove Estate including your dog.” The farmhouse page does not mention pets, so ask before you bring one.

2) Hidden Creek Winery (Ballandean), a winemaker's cottage for two

Hidden Creek's Winemaker's Cottage is, in their words, “perfect for a romantic getaway for two”. There is a fireplace with split wood provided, a covered timber deck, a breakfast basket and a complimentary bottle of their own wine on arrival. They suggest you “Take a walk around the granite boulders & vineyard”. The cellar door is open Wednesday to Sunday, 11am to 3pm.

3) Granite Ridge Wines (Ballandean), a cottage at the top of the vineyard

Fergie's Hill Cottage is “located right on the pinnacle of the Granite Ridge Winery”. It has two queen bedrooms plus a sofa bed for up to five, two bathrooms, one with a spa, a log fire and a large deck over the vineyard. No pets. The cellar door opens Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm.

4) Clever Kid Wines (Ballandean), two-bedroom cottages over the vines

Clever Kid's invitation is to “Unwind in our private vineyard cottages, surrounded by rolling hills and fresh country air, overlooking our vines.” Each is a “Fully self contained 2 bedroom” cottage. The cellar door calls itself dog friendly and opens Thursday to Sunday, 10am to 4pm. The cottage pages do not say whether dogs can stay.

5) View Wine (Ballandean), a cottage for six or a B&B for two

View Wine is the label of Sancerre Estate, and the beds are on the same vineyard. Their own site says the Shiraz Cottage sleeps six and is self-contained, and the B&B “has two king rooms perfect for couples”. Book through Sancerre Estate. The cellar door opens Friday and Saturday, 11am to 5pm, and Sunday, 10am to 2pm, and it takes an annual break in late winter, so check before you go.

6) Twisted Gum Wines (Ballandean), a cottage in the middle of 40 hectares

Twisted Gum Cottage is “Located in the centre of our 40 hectare property, with views to the vineyards and hills beyond”. “The cottage can comfortably accommodate six persons”, in two queen rooms, one with its own ensuite, and a room with two singles. Stay two nights and the third is free. The cellar door is open weekends, 10am to 4pm, and by appointment.

Glen Aplin and Eukey

7) Mountview Wines (Glen Aplin), cabins, caravans and tents

Mountview is the one for a mixed group. They offer “A mixture of studio, family and disability cabins, caravan and tent sites”, and “Mountview Wines cellar door is just walking distance from all cabins and camping sites.” The cellar door opens Friday and Saturday, 10am to 5pm, Sunday, 10am to 3pm, and by appointment Monday to Thursday.

8) The Ginyard (Eukey), an adults-only stay at a gin distillery

The Gin House is “luxurious adults only accommodation right where the small‑batch spirits are crafted”, with an outdoor bath overlooking the vineyard, a fire pit and an indoor fireplace. It is booked through Airbnb. The cellar door keeps a seasonal pattern: Saturdays, 11am to 4.30pm, from March to October, 2pm to 5pm in November, and closed December to February.

Around Stanthorpe

9) Heritage Wines of Stanthorpe (Cottonvale), rooms for five couples

Heritage sits on 30 acres of gardens, lawns, vineyard and winery north of Stanthorpe, with rooms for five couples. Each has a king or queen bed, and “Premium rooms also have an outdoor sauna spa bath and open fireplace.” The cellar door is open seven days, 10am to 4pm.

10) Granite Belt Retreat & Brewery (Stanthorpe), twenty cabins and a brewery

The biggest stay on this list. It is “Set on 30 acres of natural bushland just five minutes from Stanthorpe”, with “20 cedar cabins complete with log fire, a 1000 litre micro brewery plus a bar, restaurant and function centre”. There is also the Hidden House, four bedrooms and three bathrooms for up to 10. The pet friendly cabins come “Featuring a fenced area for dogs to roam”. The bar opens 10am to 9pm Friday to Monday and 10am to 5pm Tuesday to Thursday.

11) Ridgemill Estate (Broadwater), studio cabins and a house for groups

Ridgemill has “self-contained studio cabins and an elegant 3 bedroom winery escape house”, with king beds and fires in the cabins, up to 30 guests in all. It is the other place your dog can stay: “We have a couple of pet friendly cabins”, and “The house is also pet friendly”. Ask when you book. The cellar door opens Monday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm, and Sunday, 10am to 3pm.

The Cheat Code: How to Plan a Granite Belt Stay Without Driving Twice

Granite Belt cellar doors keep short, weekend-heavy hours, and several open only a few days a week. The mistake is booking the bed first and the tastings second.

Book in this order:

• Pick your days, then check who is open on them. Twisted Gum opens only on weekends, The Ginyard only on Saturdays, Clever Kid Thursday to Sunday, and Golden Grove closes on Wednesdays.
• Match the stay to the group. Two people are best served by Hidden Creek's cottage, a Heritage room, View Wine's B&B or the Gin House. Six or more should look at Twisted Gum, the Shiraz Cottage, Golden Grove's farmhouse, Ridgemill's house or the Hidden House.
• Make the estate you sleep at the last tasting of the day, so the final stop is the one you can walk home from.

Two things people get wrong:

• Forgetting the minimum stay. Golden Grove's farmhouse asks for two nights.
• Assuming a dog-friendly cellar door means a dog-friendly room. Golden Grove and Clever Kid welcome dogs at the tasting but do not say so for the stay, and Granite Ridge's cottage is no pets. Only Ridgemill and Granite Belt Retreat & Brewery say your dog can stay.
